We also have a pollinator garden, which is coming along. Often, we get inquiries about placing a composter in the shade. Successful composting can occur under a wide range of temperatures. While sun exposure can increase composting rates, it can also cause overheating that will kill many beneficial soil organisms.
Shade composting can mitigate this loss and prevent drying out, and although shade composting is slower, microbial action during decomposition releases significant heat, which is what sustains the ongoing activity.
